The little stories that stay

1A slate for the whole year

In October 1951, I was five years old. For my first day of school, I walked down to Uzerche with my cousin Jeannine. She was two years older than me and held my hand for the whole three kilometers.

The teacher, Mademoiselle Faure, gave me a slate and a piece of chalk. In the evening, I did not want to give the slate back. I cried, so she let me keep it until the next day. I kept it the whole year.

2My father’s ten francs

In 1965, at sixteen, I was an apprentice at the Berthier print shop, rue de la Gare. Every Saturday, the boss paid us in cash, in an envelope. My first wages: a hundred and twenty francs.

I gave it all to my father. He gave me back ten francs. “That’s for you.” With that money, I went and bought a pocketknife at Roblot’s. I still have it. The rest, my mother put away in the tin on the dresser, for the house.
